HIGHLIGHTS
FRANCE may have the ‘W’ after 80 minutes at the Stade de France, but it was a hard-fought battle and if only Italy had a proficient kicker from the outset, it could have been a very different outcome.
Under the watchful eye of former Top 14 and Heineken Cup multi-winning coach of Toulouse, Guy Novès presented his new-look team to an expectant home crowd with four starting uncapped players, placing huge responsibility on Toulouse scrumhalf, Sebastien Bézy to marshal the game, alongside Paul Jedrasiak at lock, Jonathan Danty in the centre, and Fijian-born France 7s star Virimi Vakatawa on the wing, who has not played XVs rugby since leaving Racing 92 in 2013.
Jacques Brunel had no less debutants in his starting XV, with David Odiete at fullback, Mattia Bellini on the wing, and two new front rowers in Ornel Gega and Andrea Lovotti. And what a venue to be blooded surrounded by baying Frenchmen, at least when their team plays well. But it was not close to a full house since no more tickets than those previously purchased were bought after the Paris attacks in January. Therefore kudos to the 64,000 who came and celebrated French sport in her home stadium.
Both sides had much to prove with Les Bleus under fresh leadership after long-standing mediocre results, while Brunel sees out his last tournament as Head Coach before handing over the reins to Conor O’Shea. France waltzed into the quarter finals of RWC2015 since their only real competition was Ireland, only to be resolutely broken by the All Blacks. Meanwhile, the Azzurri won only two of their four pool matches, and were not even close to making the play offs.
Italy began with a fire, and continued to take the game to France for the distance of an action-packed match where the lead changed six times before the homeside eventually took the spoils. The visitors came out the stronger from the kick off, but the penalties kept coming, from both sides, totalling 22 by the final whistle.
Leonardo Sarto was just short of scoring, but Italy kept at it until when nothing was coming from a venture into France’s 22, Carlo Canna slipped back to a position where he knew that a drop goal would be successful, and it was from off centre in the seventh minute. France tried all sorts, but Italy were determined to disrupt the scrum, steal at the breakdown, and cause as many problems as they could to prevent France from playing their game fast and wide.
Bézy’s day did not start well, first failing to equalise, and after some better play, good teamwork allowed Vakatawa to sprint over out wide with men over to score on his debut, but the conversion from touch went awry, pulled short. And it was all over for the formidable No8 Louis Picamoles, soon replaced by Yacouba Camara after tearing his hamstring, ending his Six Nations hopes, just 14 minutes into the match.
Into the second quarter and any hope France had of a comfortable opening match was dispelled as Italy continued to unsettle the homeside, despite losing their experienced openside, Alessandro Zanni with injury for ten minutes replaced by the fifth debutant, Andries Van Schalkwyk. An attacking 22 lineout for Italy was a lost opportunity as the ball was fumbled forward over the line, but not much can stop talismanic captain Sergio Parisse when he is on a mission as he reached over to score and take the lead, 8-5 with 25 minutes gone. Canna missed the conversion, his captain on his shoulder letting him know it was OK.
The Italians played a clever game, targeting Vakatawa as a weak link, quite obviously uncomfortable anywhere near a ruck, whilst the visitors played it smart not over-committing yet managing to turnover ball deftly, 19 times in all. Not until the half hour mark did France again venture into the Italian 22, and a quick tap from Gaël Fickou from the penalty was all they needed as Les Bleus lined up neatly out wide for Damien Chouly to finish the sequence with a second French try. Bézy missed again.
The final ten minutes saw handbags almost drawn, another penalty missed, this time by Canna, and Michele Campagnaro held fractionally short of the tryline in the 40th minute. France ran into the break having kicked at least a ball correctly into touch 10-8, following some remarkably terrible goal kicking from both sides with five attempts missed.
An entertaining first half remained just so in to the second, as Canna regained his confidence early reclaiming the lead just three minutes in from a scrum penalty. The young fly half endeared himself further by collecting a flick of an offload from the ruck after Parisse was held up on the line and he dotted down for try number two, duly converted. 46 minutes gone, Italy 18-10 up. Italy continually shut down most attempts by Les Bleus to make any headway, and heaped pressure on to the opposition.
The replacements began to appear on both sides as the final quarter approached, and France suddenly switched up a gear with the likes of man-monster Uini Atonio and Jefferson Poirot on debut. Vakatawa made a bullocking break to the 22 wrestling off four defenders, and as Italy’s defence fell apart from lack of communication, France hurled the ball out wide for Hugo Bonneval to charge over in the corner for a third try. A change of kicker with Jules Plisson taking over secured a conversion to take the homeside to within a point of the Azzurri. The joy returned to the crowd as Les Marseillaise reverberated round the stadium, and the trumpets rang out.
Martin Castrogiovanni arrived on the paddock for his 116th cap, accompanied by the huge Matteo Zanusso in the front row and like weebles they were all over rucks, fast shutting down Vakatawa at every turn. Bézy’s nightmare ended with Maxime Machenaud coming on, and Kelly Haimona replaced Gonzalo Garcia who had controlled the game well, while Maxim Médard received attention as France were awarded a penalty. Plisson chipped it over for 20-18 lead with just over ten minutes still on the clock.
Atonio was penalised at the breakdown for not supporting his bodyweight (though clearly there was no problem with it), and Haimona stepped up to successfully take the penalty and a 21-20 lead; six minutes remaining. France were then awarded one of their against Italy, again a wrong call by Doyle as Parisse was clearly high tackled by Camara, which Plisson belted over from halfway and just five metres from the wing! The roar around a not full Stade de France was deafening as only four minutes were left with the score at 23-21.
Italy had to muscle themselves back into an attacking position, enough for a penalty or to knock over a drop goal, but Canna had left the field limping off with Palazzani replacing him, shaking up the entire team positioning. France kept their discipline at the scrum, the reset scrum -enough to make Castro laugh with glee- and most importantly at the breakdown. The clocked turned red and Italy had possession in the midfield but needed to get closer. At 82 minutes, a frustrated Parisse failed horribly going for a drop goal of his own inside the 10m line which had no chance of landing in the correct hemisphere, and the final whistle ended an excellent opening match for the 2016 Six Nations.
"It is always interesting to start with a win, even if our job in the next few days is going to be to focus on the content of the game, to see what we need to work on," Novès said post-match.
"Italy could have won as well so let's enjoy the win. I also want to focus on the enthusiasm the boys showed at times. We needed to be more lucid, and the first have didn't have enough tempo. Our defensive form wasn't good enough, which gave Italy a lot of possession and created a few gaps.”
Brunel was thoroughly pleased with his novice side almost beating France: "I had dreamt about it, or at least I hoped they could do it.
"We didn't know how the young guys would face up, if they were going to be scared, if they were going to be able to take initiatives. And they did, they weren't afraid at all. Some people had predicted a French victory by more than 30 points, it wasn't. We proved that nothing is ever set in stone."
